What is Radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It's invisible, odorless, and tasteless, making it undetectable by human senses. While radon is harmless outdoors, it can accumulate in enclosed spaces like homes and pose a significant health risk. High levels of radon exposure are linked to an increased risk of lung cancer, especially among non-smokers. Fortunately, radon levels can be easily reduced through mitigation systems, making your home safer!
How is Radon Mitigation Performed?
Radon mitigation typically involves installing an Active Soil Depressurization System (ASDS), also known as a Sub-Slab Depressurization System. Here's how it works:
Installation: A certified professional drills a hole through the concrete slab and inserts a pipe into the soil or gravel beneath the foundation. The installer then seals the opening to prevent any gas from leaking through.
Suction: A special fan is connected to the pipe, creating a suction that draws radon gas from beneath the foundation.
Venting: The radon-laden air is then vented outdoors, safely away from your home.
This process effectively reduces radon levels by preventing the gas from entering your living space. It's important to note that mitigation should be performed by a qualified professional to ensure optimal results and safety.
